Build and Scale Enterprise-Grade Self-Checkout

Thu, April 23 at 12:40 PM - 1:10 PM GMT+5:30ArchitectureOpsTech

Self-checkout has rapidly evolved from a cost-saving convenience to a strategic centrepiece of the modern store experience. This session explores how retailers can design intuitive, high-availability self-checkout journeys that reduce friction, improve labor productivity, and strengthen loss-prevention controls. We will share practical lessons on orchestrating hardware, software, and AI-driven risk signals at the edge, while balancing speed, security, and customer trust.

As self-checkout matures from an in-store capability to a strategic differentiator, the next frontier is platformization and monetization. In this segment, we will also share the journey of building Lowe’s Meridius, a fully homegrown, enterprise-grade self-checkout platform and transforming it into a scalable product for the broader retail ecosystem. From a successful debut and industry recognition at NRF Retail’s Big Show, to enabling diverse retail formats, Lowe’s Meridius represents how in-house innovation, proven at scale, can evolve into a market-ready platform: Built by retailer, for retailers.

In this session, we will dive into how we:

  • Externalized a tightly coupled internal system into a flexible, configurable platform that caters to multiple retailer archetypes
  • Built for scale, interoperability, and rapid deployment across varied store environments
  • Embedded AI-led capabilities, from intelligent item identification to shrink detection, to enhance both experience and control

This session will highlight not just the technology, but the strategic shift from building for self to building for the industry, unlocking new revenue streams while accelerating innovation.

What You Will Learn

  • How to design self-checkout systems that balance speed, security, and customer experience
  • How to evolve an internal retail system into a scalable, configurable platform
  • How AI capabilities can enhance self-checkout through item identification and loss-prevention signals

Who Should Attend

  • Software developers and engineers
  • Software and enterprise architects
  • Platform and infrastructure engineers
  • Retail technology and product leaders
  • Teams building in-store or edge-based retail systems
