AI Is Not the Risk. Architectural Drift Is

Tue, April 21 at 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM GMT+5:30ArchitectureDeepTech TechLead

AI is accelerating how quickly software is written and delivered. As delivery speeds increase, systems begin to evolve faster than they are designed. The primary risk is not incorrect code, but the gradual erosion of system integrity through inconsistent decisions, hidden coupling, and the loss of clear architectural boundaries.

This session examines how engineering teams can sustain delivery velocity while maintaining control over system design. It focuses on identifying early signs of architectural drift and adopting practices that preserve structure, clarity, and long-term system integrity as development accelerates.

What You Will Learn

  • Why architectural drift is a greater risk than incorrect code in AI-assisted development

  • How system integrity degrades through inconsistent decisions and hidden coupling

  • Approaches to maintain architectural clarity while sustaining high delivery velocity

Who Should Attend

  • Software developers

  • Software architects

  • Platform engineers

  • Engineering managers and team leads

  • Teams working with AI-assisted development workflows

About the speaker

Sunil Kalkunte

Sunil Kalkunte

Director of Engineering , 7-Eleven Global Solution Center (GSC)

Sunil Kalkunte is Director of Engineering at 7-Eleven Global Solution Center (GSC), where he leads the engineering teams building the digital platforms that power global store and franchise operations. He is responsible for architecting scalable, cost-efficient systems where reliability and execution discipline are non-negotiable.

With over 23 years of experience across the U.S., Mexico, Australia, and India, Sunil has led large-scale digital transformations in fintech and retail. His career reflects a systems-thinking approach—designing technical architectures and operating models that are modular, resilient, and aligned with enterprise growth.

Before 7-Eleven, Sunil was Managing Director and Head of Engineering at Code and Theory India. There, he scaled the engineering organization from 100 to over 350 specialists, led platform modernization programs for global clients, and established the India hub as a high-performance delivery center. He works at the intersection of deep technical strategy and business outcomes, helping senior leadership navigate enterprise-scale technology investments with clarity and discipline.

Sunil’s experience spans backend systems, cloud-native infrastructure, data platforms, and applied AI—often building capabilities from first principles. He holds a CTO Program certification from IIT Kanpur and an Executive Diploma in Advanced Strategies from XLRI, focused on technology leadership and long-term value creation.

Outside of his role at GSC, Sunil advises early-stage startups, working closely with founders to instill architectural clarity and execution rigor as they scale.
